Making one good AI video clip is fairly easy now. The harder part is getting a clip that follows what you planned.
This becomes clear when a project has several reference images, a specific location and a camera move that needs to end in the right place. A nice-looking result is not enough. You need control over what the model uses and what happens in the shot.
Seedance 2.5 and Runway Gen-4.5 approach that problem differently.
Seedance 2.5 gives you more room to work with reference material. Runway Gen-4.5 puts more focus on describing and directing a shot.
They Don’t Start From the Same Place
There is an important difference before comparing them.
Runway has a References workflow for Gen-4 Image. That should not be confused with Gen-4.5 video generation.
Gen-4.5 currently works with Text to Video and Image to Video. You can start with a prompt or an image, then describe the movement and action you want.
Seedance 2.5 takes another approach on JXP. Images, video and audio can all be brought into the workflow as reference material.
So rather than asking which model has “better reference control,” I would start with two simpler questions:
How much existing material do I need to use?
How specific is the camera movement?
The answers make the comparison much easier.

Say I want to make a short product video.
I already have a clean product image, a couple of location references and a short clip with the camera movement I want.
I could try to describe all of this in a long prompt. But that quickly becomes difficult to manage.

Having room for many files does not mean using all of them is a good idea.
For most projects, I would start with only the references that clearly serve a purpose.
If one image shows the product well, use it.
If one clip clearly shows the camera move, start there.
Adding several similar references can make it harder to understand what is actually guiding the result.
A smaller reference set also makes testing easier. If something goes wrong, there are fewer inputs to check.
Runway Gen-4.5 Starts With the Shot
With Gen-4.5, I would prepare the same idea differently.
Instead of building the brief around several reference files, I would choose a strong starting image and spend more time describing the camera.
For example:
“Start at table height. Slowly move toward the product. As the camera gets closer, rise slightly and move around the right side. Keep the product near the center of the frame.”
The instruction is simple, but every part has a clear job.
This is the kind of task I would give Gen-4.5: one clear starting point and a specific camera move.
Its current video workflow can start from text or an image, with the prompt describing movement, timing and changes inside the scene.
If the starting frame is already good, the main job becomes directing what happens next.
Putting Both Models on the Same Brief
A simple product shot makes the difference easier to see.
The brief is this:
A drink can sits on a wooden table in a warm café. The shot starts wide. The camera moves toward the can, travels around its right side and finishes with a close product view.
There are three source files:
I would judge both workflows on the same four things:
Product consistency: Does the can stay close to the original reference?
Environment: Does the café still match the intended setting?
Camera movement: Does the camera complete the planned move?
Final frame: Does the shot actually finish on the close product view?
With Seedance 2.5, I would use the source material more directly. The product image handles the subject, the café image gives the setting, and the video provides a movement reference. The prompt connects them.
With Gen-4.5, I would simplify the setup. I would choose the strongest starting frame and describe the camera move in more detail.
This does not tell us which model wins. It gives us a fairer way to test them.
Clip Length Changes How You Plan
Duration is another practical difference.
JXP currently supports Seedance 2.5 single-segment generations of up to 30 seconds. Runway Gen-4.5 currently supports clips of up to 10 seconds.
A longer generation gives you room for several beats.
For example:
0–5 seconds: follow the subject from behind.
5–10 seconds: move toward the side.
10–15 seconds: move around toward the front.
15–20 seconds: slow down and settle on the final composition.
That can be useful when the shot needs to develop over time.
But longer does not automatically mean easier.
More time gives the subject, background and camera movement more chances to drift away from the original plan. Sometimes one short, clearly defined shot is easier to control.
Gen-4.5’s shorter clips naturally fit that approach: make one shot, check it, then move on to the next.
For an editing workflow built around individual shots, that can be a practical way to work.
A Simple Way to Start With Seedance 2.5
For a reference-heavy project using the JXP Seedance 2.5 AI Video Generator, I would keep the first attempt small.
Start with one main subject reference.
Add one or two images for the setting if needed.
Use a motion reference when the camera movement is difficult to explain with words.
Then run a test.
If something is missing, change one part at a time. Add a reference, remove one, or simplify the prompt.
This makes it much easier to see what is helping and what is not.
Which Approach Fits the Project?
The choice mostly depends on what you have before you start.
If the idea already exists across several images, clips or audio references, Seedance 2.5 gives you more ways to bring those materials into the generation process.
If you already have a strong starting frame and know exactly how the shot should move, Gen-4.5 gives you a more direct way to focus on camera direction.
A larger project may use both approaches. One scene may depend on several references, while another only needs a starting image and a clear camera instruction.
There is no reason every shot has to use the same workflow.
Final Thoughts
Comparing AI video models only by their best-looking demo clips does not tell you much about how they fit into a real project.
If most of the idea already exists in your reference files, start there. If the shot is clear and the camera movement is the hard part, focus on direction.
That is a more useful way to choose between Seedance 2.5 and Runway Gen-4.5 than comparing image quality alone.
