Women’s Shearling: How to Choose Between a Coat and a Jacket

How to Choose Between a Coat and a Jacket

Shearling has a way of becoming the coat you grab every morning without thinking. It’s warm without being heavy, it breathes when you walk into a heated shop, and it looks better with age. The hard part is choosing which one, because there are more options than most people expect.

First: what you’re actually buying

Shearling is lambskin tanned with the wool left on. The wool sits against you and traps heat, and the leather outside blocks wind. Unlike a wool coat with a synthetic lining, it regulates temperature naturally, so you’re less likely to overheat on the subway and freeze on the platform.

Merino or Toscana?

  •               Merino: short, dense, tightly curled wool. Clean-looking, less bulky and the easiest to wear every day.
  •               Toscana: long, silky wool, often shown off at the collar, cuffs and hem. Softer around the face and more luxurious-looking.

A Merino coat with a Toscana collar gives you a bit of both.

Suede or nappa finish?

A suede finish is soft, matte and relaxed, perfect with denim and knits, but it needs more care in wet weather. A nappa finish is smooth and sealed, so it shrugs off light rain and slush, and it looks sharper over workwear. If your winters are wet, nappa is the practical choice.

Reversible shearling: two coats in one

Reversible styles can be worn with the leather out or the wool out. Wool-out looks cosy and textured for weekends. Leather-out looks polished for the office. If you only want to buy one piece, a reversible shearling is excellent value.

When to choose a coat

A women’s shearling coat at knee or mid-thigh length is the warmer choice. It covers your seat and the backs of your legs, which you’ll appreciate on windy days. It’s also the better choice if you walk a lot or wear skirts and dresses in winter. Belted styles give shape so the coat doesn’t look boxy.

When to choose a jacket

A jacket is the one you’ll wear most often. It’s lighter, easier to drive in, and works with everything from jeans to tailored trousers. Bombers, moto shapes, collarless styles and short boleros all come in shearling now, so you’re not limited to the classic aviator look. A reversible shearling jacket is one of the most versatile pieces you can own.

Fit tips

  •               Try it on over a chunky sweater. Shearling has very little stretch.
  •               The shoulder seam should sit on your shoulder bone.
  •               Close it fully and reach forward. It shouldn’t pull across your back.
  •               A slightly snug fit will relax a little with wear, but don’t count on a full size.

Care in winter

Shake off snow before it melts. If it gets damp, hang it on a wide hanger at room temperature and keep it away from radiators. Brush suede gently once it’s fully dry. Never machine-wash or regular dry-clean shearling. Use a specialist cleaner. In summer, store it in a breathable garment bag somewhere cool.

Get the type and length right and a shearling piece will see you through more winters than any other coat you own.
